The JMU Flute Club and the School of Music present FLUTE FLING 2018! on Saturday, March 17, 2018. This event is a fun and informative day of flute activities presented and sponsored by the students of the JMU Flute Club and geared towards flutists of all ages, teachers, band directors, and flute aficionados!

This year’s FLUTE FLING! will feature MARCO GRANADOS, flute, in recital and masterclasses, joined by ELENA ABEND, piano. FLUTE FLING! will also feature a variety of workshops, a flute choir reading session and performance for all participants, masterclasses, and performances by JMU Flute Professor Beth Chandler, the JMU Flute Choir, and student soloists. All events will be held at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in the School of Music and the beautiful, state-of-the-art JMU Forbes Center for the Performing Arts.

Advanced Students (Grades 9 and up):

Dr. Chandler will be presenting a masterclass with selected high school performers. If you are interested in applying to perform in this class, please complete the pre-registration form, and email the unedited recording to There is a $10 application fee which can be included with your registration fee. An accompanist is encouraged for the recording, but not required. Please apply by Wednesday, February 28.


Beginner and Intermediate (Grades 8 and under):

An Open Masterclass will be offered by JMU doctoral student Lydia Carroll. No application is necessary. Please bring your flute and music—any individual or ensemble with a prepared piece is welcome to participate!



■ Pre-registration fees for students ($25), teachers ($25), and accompanying non-flutist adults ($10) cover admission to all events and include lunch on Saturday, March 17. Payment details can be found on the pre-registration form.

■ Pre-registration forms must be submitted online by Monday, March 12, 2018. Late or on-site registration will incur an additional $5 fee.

■ We offer a group pre-registration discount. See details on the pre-registration form.

■ Each flutist must submit an individual form.

■ Registration and check-in will be on Saturday, March 17, 2018, 8:30-9:00 am.

What to bring, etc.:

All flutists are encouraged to bring flutes and piccolos to participate in workshops, the open masterclass (for Grades 8 and under), and the flute choir reading sessions. Alto and bass flutes are especially welcome. Dress is casual and comfortable.



From the NORTH:

Take I-81 South to Exit 245, Port Republic Rd. At the top of the ramp, make a right at the light to head west on Port Republic Rd.


From the SOUTH:

Take I-81 North to Exit 245, Port Republic Rd. At the top of the ramp, make a left at the light to head west on Port Republic Rd.


Approaching campus on Port Republic Road:

■ Pass the main entrance to James Madison University on your right and continue over a small hill.

■ Turn right at the next light (S. Main St./Route 11 North). Continue on S. Main St. for approximately one-half mile.

■ Turn left at the next traffic light (Warsaw Ave.). If you reach Grace St. you have missed the turn.

■ Drive straight through the next stoplight and around the back of the Warsaw Ave. parking deck. Then, park on any floor.

■ Exit the parking deck towards the Forbes Center, and walk through the viaduct, crossing under Main St. Continue up the sidewalk and turn left to reach the Music Building, which is the first building on the left side of the Quad. Proceed through the front doors of the Music Building to join us!
